On the fourth day of the Boxing Day Test match, Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah made headlines with a playful comment directed at Australian cricketer Marnus Labuschagne. This happened on December 30, as Bumrah was bowling and seemed to question Labuschagne’s fortune during the match.
Labuschagne played an impressive innings, scoring 70 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. However, he had a fair amount of luck on his side, surviving several close calls early on. Indian bowlers, including Bumrah, Akash Deep, and Mohammed Siraj, posed a serious challenge for him. Akash Deep even managed to get an edge off Labuschagne’s bat that flew to slips, but Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn’t hold onto the catch.
At one point during the innings, Labuschagne faced an LBW appeal that was turned down by the on-field umpire, Michael Gough. India decided to use the Decision Review System (DRS), which indicated that the ball would have clipped the top of leg stump but the original decision stood.
As Labuschagne batted on, Bumrah cheekily remarked, “You’re the luckiest player I’ve ever seen in my life, Marnus,” highlighting the Australian’s fortunate streak that day.
In the 56th over, Labuschagne’s luck ran out. He got out to Mohammed Siraj in a fashion similar to his earlier close call. After getting hit on the pads while trying to defend a delivery, the umpire ruled him out. The DRS was called upon again, confirming that the ball would have hit the stumps, solidifying the umpire’s decision.
During Day 4, Labuschagne was pivotal in helping Australia reach a strong position, contributing significantly to their total. By the time he was dismissed, Australia was leading by 279 runs, having lost 9 wickets. He was the top scorer for his team that day, with Pat Cummins being the next highest scorer with 41 runs before getting out.
As the match continued to unfold, eyes remained on the performances of both teams in this gripping contest.
