Title: Akshita Maheshwari’s Journey from Jaipur to Mumbai Indians in Women’s Cricket
Akshita Maheshwari is making waves in the world of women’s cricket, particularly as a new player for the Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Growing up in Jaipur, where cricket has long been seen as a man’s sport, Akshita faced numerous hurdles. However, she never let these challenges dampen her passion for the game, thanks in part to the unwavering support from her family.
As a teenager, Akshita tried to join various cricket academies but encountered rejections due to their lack of focus on women’s cricket. Yet, her perseverance paid off. After much searching, she found the KL Saini Cricket Academy, where she was encouraged to develop her skills. "I always loved playing outside rather than staying home, even if it meant facing some criticism for playing with boys," Akshita shared in an interview.
With the WPL mini-auction looming, competition was fierce, with 122 players vying for just 19 spots. In the midst of her games in the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy with Rajasthan, Akshita learned about the interest in her performance. "I was hopeful but also trying to manage my expectations," she recalled. When Mumbai Indians selected her at a base price of Rs 20 lakhs, the news was overwhelming. "It felt surreal, and my family was overjoyed!"
Akshita’s association with Mumbai goes beyond the WPL deal. Earlier this year, she shone in the Women’s Under-23 One-Day Trophy, finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets. Her impressive performance included two hat-tricks, showcasing her talent. This led to a pivotal moment in her career when Mumbai Indians took notice of her skills.
Reflecting on her time at the KL Saini Academy and her training under Ashwani Kherwa, Akshita emphasized the importance of hard work and belief. "Two years ago, breaking into the Rajasthan team seemed impossible, but my coach gave me confidence, which made all the difference."
Known for her powerful bowling and capable batting, Akshita is eager to learn from some of the best players in the game. She looks forward to playing alongside stars like Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews. "Learning from them will only enhance my game. I’m committed to improving myself every day."
Among her inspirations are renowned fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Akshita aspires to become someone her team can rely on during critical moments. "I want to be that impactful player, just like my idols," she said.
With the excitement of sharing a dressing room with Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur and learning from former South African fast bowler Shabnim Ismail, Akshita is full of enthusiasm. "I can’t wait to gain experience and advice from them. All of this will help me grow as a player," she added.
The inaugural season of the WPL has already seen players like Saika Ishaque break into the national team after their performances. Akshita knows that with some strong displays for Mumbai Indians, she too could earn her chance at the international level. Her journey proves that dedication and support can uplift talent, and she is ready to seize her moment in the spotlight.
