PM Modi Begins Nigeria Visit as Part of Three-Nation Tour
November 17, 2024 | 5:47 PM IST

On Sunday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Nigeria, marking the start of his three-nation tour. Following Nigeria, he will continue to Brazil and Guyana.

During his visit, PM Modi emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria. In his opening remarks during a bilateral meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Modi expressed optimism for future collaboration, stating, “We give high priority to our strategic partnership with Nigeria… I am confident that a new chapter in our ties will begin following our talks.” This visit is particularly notable as it is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years.

PM Modi highlighted India’s commitment to helping those affected by recent flooding in Nigeria, mentioning the delivery of 20 tonnes of relief supplies. He also recognized the vibrant Indian community in Nigeria, which numbers around 60,000, calling them a “key pillar” in the relationship between both nations.

Another significant point made by Modi was the recent inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20, a decision made during the summit in New Delhi in September 2023. He described this achievement as a “significant outcome” for global cooperation.

India and Nigeria have shared a close partnership for over 60 years, with official diplomatic relations established in 1958, just before Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule. The relationship was further elevated to a “strategic partnership” during a visit by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2007.

Currently, more than 200 Indian companies operate in Nigeria, investing around $27 billion in key manufacturing sectors. These businesses are now the second-largest employers in the country, following the federal government.

This visit by PM Modi underscores the deepening ties between India and Nigeria, highlighting mutual cooperation and future prospects for both nations.
