Amazon Set to Roll Out Trainium 2, a New AI Chip Aiming to Challenge Nvidia

Amazon Prepares to Unveil Next-Gen AI Chip Trainium 2

Amazon is set to launch its latest artificial intelligence chip, Trainium 2, as part of its efforts to reduce its dependence on Nvidia, the current leader in the AI chip market. This new chip is a part of Amazon Web Services (AWS) strategy to strengthen its cloud computing capabilities through custom-designed technology tailored for its extensive network of data centers.

According to a report from the Financial Times, Amazon’s goal is to lower operational costs not just for itself but also for its AWS customers by utilizing its proprietary chips.

Annapurna Labs at the Forefront of Chip Development

The design and development of the Trainium 2 chip are being led by Annapurna Labs, an Israeli startup that Amazon acquired in 2015. The launch is anticipated next month, and this new AI chip aims to facilitate the training of large-scale AI models.

Reports suggest that Trainium 2 is currently being tested by several notable companies, including Anthropic, an AI startup backed by Amazon. This move places AWS and Annapurna in direct competition with Nvidia, which holds a commanding position in the AI processor sector. Dave Brown, vice president of compute and networking services at AWS, mentioned, "We want to be absolutely the best place to run Nvidia. But at the same time, we think it’s healthy to have an alternative."

Amazon also highlights that its earlier AI chips, known as "Inferentia," are already operating at 40% lower costs compared to comparable products on the market.

Free Computing Power for Researchers

In a bid to promote the use of its AI chips, Amazon Web Services has announced an initiative to offer free computing power to researchers working with its custom AI technology. AWS plans to provide approximately $110 million in credits to those who want to access its cloud data centers and use "Trainium" chips to develop their AI models.

This initiative is designed to encourage researchers to adopt Amazon’s AI chips, showcasing the capabilities of its technology while expanding its presence in the research community. By providing free access to its advanced cloud infrastructure and hardware, AWS hopes to attract more users and drive interest in its AI advancements.
