In a startling reality where one in eight women will face a breast cancer diagnosis at some juncture in their lives, medical experts underscore the paramount importance of early detection and prompt intervention.

“The overarching aim in the realm of breast cancer detection is to unearth those tumors before they manifest any formidable symptoms,” Dr. Nicole Saphier, a medical contributor, articulated during an engaging discussion with Fox News Digital.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the predominant indicator of breast cancer typically manifests as a new lump or growth.

WHAT TO DO FOLLOWING A BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS: TEN CRUCIAL STEPS FROM THE EXPERTS

“The most frequent sign we encounter is a discerning mass,” Saphier confirmed emphatically.

“Individuals often present with a palpable lump. While it might be a benign cyst, it could also signify cancer.”

Yet, not all indicators are overtly apparent.

“It transcends merely feeling a lump,” Saphier emphasized. “There are several other manifestations that can signify the onset of breast cancer.”

1. Nipple Discharge

Research indicates that nipple discharge presents itself in about 3% to 9% of breast cancer cases.

In particular, any discharge tinged with blood is considered a red flag, according to Saphier.

“Some women have noticed traces of blood on their undergarments,” she remarked. “This may indicate the presence of cancer cells within the duct.”

2. Itchy Skin

Saphier noted that some women endure an irritating itch, either affecting the breast’s skin or the nipple itself.

“This could signal an inflammatory process occurring within the breast,” she cautioned.

3. Swollen Lymph Nodes

Another telltale early symptom is the enlargement or formation of lumps in the lymph nodes, the doctor highlighted.

These abnormalities might present within the breast tissue, the underarm area, or the axillary region, which is the space beneath the shoulder joint where the arm connects to the shoulder.

“This not only suggests cancer within the breast but also indicates a potential spread to the lymphatic system,” Saphier explained.

4. Red or Inflamed Skin

This symptom, one of the most prevalent indicators, may signify inflammatory breast cancer, described as a “rare and aggressive type of invasive breast cancer where lymphatic vessels in the skin become obstructed by cancer cells,” according to the ACS.

“This particular cancer deviates from the norm; it doesn’t typically form a mass,” Saphier informed.

Individuals often find themselves undergoing treatment for weeks or even months, convinced they are combating a skin ailment or an allergic reaction, when in fact an infection may be lurking beneath the surface, the physician stated.

“What may seem like a mere skin issue could actually be masking something far more ominous,” she cautioned.

The main takeaway, Saphier said, is to pay attention to your body and take action if you notice any changes. (iStock)

Saphier related experiences of patients she encounters, often those who have been prescribed steroids or antibiotics yet have never undergone a crucial skin biopsy.

“Until a biopsy is conducted… you may not ascertain whether it’s an inflammatory cancer that’s causing these issues,” she lamented. “Sadly, this can culminate in a delayed diagnosis.”
