R Ashwin Shares IPL Retention Strategy: Keep MS Dhoni in the Squad!

India’s cricketing maestro, Ravichandran Ashwin, has ignited a fiery debate surrounding player retention strategies in the Indian Premier League (IPL), particularly with an intriguing proposition for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as they gear up for the monumental mega auction in 2025. In an engaging discourse on his YouTube channel, Ashwin put forth the audacious suggestion that CSK ought to retain their iconic captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but rather than classify him as an uncapped player—often a more economical choice—he should instead be preserved as a capped player.

What a provocative stance! Ashwin argues for Dhoni’s retention in the prestigious circle of capped players, standing alongside luminaries such as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube. This assertion has set the cricketing community abuzz, particularly since the regulations allow for Dhoni’s classification as an uncapped player due to his absence from international cricket for over five years—a move that would liberate vital funds for the franchise’s retention strategy.

“If Mumbai Indians can hold onto six players, why can’t CSK? We boast Ruturaj, Jadeja, Pathirana, Dube, MS Dhoni, and Sameer Rizvi in our arsenal,” Ashwin remarked, weighing in on the intricate calculations of player retention amidst the cutthroat world of franchise cricket.

However, this bold proclamation drew a sharp retort from Prasanna Raman, a former South African performance analyst, who expressed skepticism over Ashwin’s suggestion of retaining Sameer Rizvi at the hefty sum of Rs 4 crore. Rizvi, who was acquired by CSK for a staggering Rs 8.4 crore prior to the IPL 2024 season, had a rather muted performance, eking out a mere 51 runs in eight matches at a strike rate that left much to be desired. Raman posited, “I’m not even sure if he would be willing to play for Rs 4 crore.”

Yet, Ashwin stood resolutely in defense of Rizvi’s untapped potential, alluding to the young player’s remarkable display during the UP T20 League. He drew parallels to emerging talents like Shahrukh Khan, Abhinav Manohar, and Dhruv Jurel, underscoring Rizvi’s latent capabilities and promising trajectory.

“He’s lighting it up consistently. The upside is tremendous. He’s on the cusp of joining the ranks of the next generation of stars,” Ashwin asserted with palpable confidence.

With the IPL Governing Council bestowing upon CSK the possibility of retaining Dhoni as an uncapped player for a mere Rs 4 crore, Ashwin’s argument to classify him as a capped player underscores a profound respect for Dhoni’s enduring influence as both a player and leader within the franchise.

As the CSK think tank grapples with these pivotal decisions, Ashwin’s proposition has sparked a riveting dialogue on navigating the delicate balance between honoring franchise legends and the merciless realities of auction economics. With IPL 2025 looming on the horizon, CSK must contemplate these strategies judiciously to fortify their competitive stance in the exhilarating realm of cricket.
