Dussehra echoed with fervor across the nation on Saturday, with throngs of jubilant spectators gathering to witness the dramatic conflagration of Ravana effigies. This fiery spectacle marked the grand finale of a ten-day extravaganza filled with ritualistic fervor, joyous singing, vibrant dances, and colorful processions.

The towering effigies of the notorious demon king, his formidable brother Kumbhakarna, and his valiant son Meghnad were consumed by flames, as spectators erupted with jubilant cheers. Firecrackers lit up the night sky, adding a dazzling display to the electric atmosphere. Social media was awash with vibrant celebrations as individuals exchanged wishes for health and joy, capturing the spirit of the season.

In the heart of these festivities, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the Red Fort Parade Ground, warmly welcomed by the Sri Dharmik Leela Committee organizers. Their presence underscored the celebration of Lord Rama’s decisive victory over the ten-headed Ravana, a powerful representation of the eternal struggle between good and evil.

Across numerous venues, elaborate Durga Puja pandals blossomed, creatively showcasing themes that ranged from political satire to iconic artistic representations. Families and friends flocked in droves to admire the stunning decorations and to immerse themselves in the celebratory ambiance.

As Ram Leela—an impassioned theatrical retelling of Lord Ram’s narrative—unfolded in cities, towns, and even villages, actors adorned in stunning costumes brought the ancient Hindu epic to life. Yet, amidst these festivities, a chilling event transpired in the Haridwar district jail, where two notorious criminals seized the moment to escape during a Ram Leela performance. Authorities have since mobilized efforts to recapture Pankaj, jailed for murder, and Rajkumar, an undertrial.

In another disheartening incident reported from Odisha, thieves made off with gold and silver ornaments valued at around ₹10 lakh from a Durga Puja pandal at the Barundei temple in Jajpur district.

In a separate yet significant observance, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh performed “Shastra Puja” (worship of weapons) at the Sukna military station in West Bengal, emphasizing the importance of readiness. He stated, “India has never instigated conflict from a place of malice,” articulating the country’s history of responding only to threats against its sovereignty and values. “If our interests are jeopardized, we will not shy away from decisive action,” he proclaimed.

Meanwhile, the External Affairs Ministry expressed grave concern regarding reported assaults on a Durga Puja pandal and a theft at a revered Kali temple in Bangladesh, urging the Bangladeshi government to guarantee the safety of Hindus and other minorities.

During the annual Vijayadasahmi rally of the RSS in Nagpur, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed the shifting dynamics of India’s standing in the world. He remarked, “India has emerged stronger and more respected, yet insidious conspiracies challenge our resolve.” Emphasizing the essence of national character, he noted that the coming year is critical as the RSS approaches its centenary.

Bhagwat also pointed out a troubling fundamentalism he perceives in Bangladesh, asserting that Hindus must unite in self-defense. “Being disorganized and vulnerable invites oppression,” he implored, stressing the urgency of solidarity.

Amidst these reflections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah acknowledged the impact of the RSS since its establishment in 1925, lauding its role in nurturing patriotism among young Indians.

On this vibrant day of Dussehra, President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi were present to witness the fiery destruction of Ravana’s effigies at the iconic Lal Qila. Their ceremonial welcome included a presentation of a “trishul” (trident) to the president and a “gada” (mace) to the prime minister, symbolizing strength and governance.

With the grand Ramleela performances culminating in bursts of flame and uproarious cheers, this year’s Dussehra celebrations resonated deeply, embodying the timeless message of victory of righteousness over malevolence.
