This legal move came after their immigration status was abruptly changed without proper notice or explanation.

This situation unfolds as President Trump continues to criticize elite institutions like Harvard University, threatening to withdraw federal funding and tax-exempt status due to their refusal to comply with extensive government oversight.

Chinmay Deore is joined in the lawsuit by Xiangyun Bu and Qiuyi Yang from China, and Yogesh Joshi from Nepal. They filed the lawsuit targeting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and immigration officials on Friday.

The students argue that their status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) was terminated without adequate notification or justification. SEVIS is the database used to monitor information about nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors in the United States.

The lawsuit has also included a request for an emergency ban on the enforcement of their status termination, as stated by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan, which is representing the students. The lawsuit aims to restore their F-1 student status, allowing them to continue their education and avoid the threat of detention and deportation.

The court filing names DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, and ICE Detroit Field Office Director Robert Lynch. The complaint highlights that none of the students have been charged or convicted of any crime in the United States, nor have they violated immigration laws or participated in any political protests on campus.

The legal document further notes that the DHS failed to provide meaningful reasoning for the termination of the students’ F-1 status.

Ramis Wadood, a staff attorney with the ACLU of Michigan, expressed concern about the far-reaching implications of such government actions. He remarked that these severe and unlawful decisions do not just affect the students involved; they can also deter future international scholars from considering Michigan and the US as viable options for their academic pursuits.

In the midst of the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies, Chinmay Deore, an Indian student studying in the United States, alongside three other international students, has taken legal action against the government due to fears of deportation.
