According to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), details about this AI deployment were revealed in a privacy impact memo released recently. This move follows new guidance from the government encouraging agencies to adopt AI technologies to improve services and reduce expenses.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that overturned a more cautious approach to AI introduced by former President Joe Biden. Trump argued that the previous guidelines were obstacles to American innovation in the AI sector.<\/p>\n
Despite the government’s push for AI adoption, the White House has been careful when discussing its application on sensitive data. Some lawsuits have been filed by government employees and others concerned about privacy and civil rights issues related to AI’s use, especially with the involvement of Elon Musk\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency, which has sought access to federal data.<\/p>\n
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the OPM’s AI project, emphasizing that it would lead to significant improvements in the efficiency of the federal personnel office. The OPM explained that the project intends to use AI to pull information from electronic personnel records to fix inaccuracies. The work will be conducted in secure settings by authorized personnel and contractors, and will employ \u201cstateless models,\u201d ensuring that personal records aren’t used to train or refine AI systems.<\/p>\n
Upgrading personnel records has been a key focus of the teams directed by Musk’s department, which aims to modernize federal IT systems. Notably, OPM currently processes retirement paperwork manually in an old limestone mine in Pennsylvania.
