New Indian Consulate Opened in Belfast to Support Local Diaspora<\/strong><\/p>\n Belfast, March 7 (PTI) \u2014 External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar officially launched a new Consulate General of India in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Friday. This initiative aims to assist the increasing Indian community in the area.<\/p>\n During a ceremony attended by community leaders and distinguished guests, Minister Jaishankar emphasized that the opening of the consulate reflects the strengthening relationship between India and the United Kingdom and acknowledges the contributions of the Indian diaspora.<\/p>\n Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is home to approximately 10,000 individuals of Indian origin, according to the latest census figures.<\/p>\n Jaishankar remarked, \u201cBelfast serves as a crossroads between our UK and European policies,\u201d highlighting the region’s unique position. He mentioned ongoing discussions about free trade agreements with both the UK and the EU, expressing hope for their quick resolution.<\/p>\n The minister spoke about Northern Ireland’s rich economic background, especially in shipbuilding, and noted that many Indian IT companies operate in the region. <\/p>\n \u201cWe recognize the economic potential, but our focus remains on serving the Indian community. As our Prime Minister often states, our government prioritizes the diaspora’s significance and contributions," he added. \u201cWe aim to show our appreciation through various means, such as making services more accessible, and I am confident that this Consulate will achieve that.\u201d<\/p>\n Following the inauguration, Jaishankar engaged with local political leaders, including Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelley and Junior Minister Aisling Reilly, to thank them for their support in establishing the consulate.
