Khaleda Zia Calls for Quick Reforms to Enable Elections in Bangladesh<\/strong><\/p>\n DHAKA: Khaleda Zia, a prominent leader of Bangladesh\u2019s Bangladesh National Party (BNP), urged on Thursday for interim authorities to implement \u201cminimal\u201d reforms to ensure timely elections following a significant change in leadership last year.<\/p>\n In a recent broadcast, Zia expressed, \u201cPeople are looking forward to a widely accepted election after swift and minimal reforms that will help restore our democratic system.\u201d Zia, who has served as prime minister twice, has faced legal troubles, spending time in jail since 2018 for corruption accusations during the administration of her rival, Sheikh Hasina.<\/p>\n Zia’s situation shifted after Hasina was ousted in August and sought refuge in India. The previous government was compelled to leave due to movements led by students and ourselves,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n The government of Sheikh Hasina has faced criticism for inhibiting democracy by influencing judicial and civil service processes, leading to accusations of unfair elections.<\/p>\n Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Laureate who is currently at the helm of the caretaker government, has initiated various oversight commissions dedicated to implementing necessary reforms. He indicated that the timing of the next election would depend on political party discussions, with hopes for elections to take place in late 2025 or early 2026.<\/p>\n Zia also called on all Bangladeshis to unite in addressing the rising concerns regarding law and order. \u201cThose who supported the previous regime are scheming to undermine the achievements of our mass movement,\u201d she warned. \u201cWe must thwart these plans through an unwavering alliance among ourselves and with the people of Bangladesh.\u201d<\/p>\n Sheikh Hasina, who currently resides in self-imposed exile in India, is defying an arrest warrant in Dhaka, facing serious charges, including allegations of crimes against humanity.
