In a joint interview with Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Fox News, Trump described such a move as "very unfair," especially if it was perceived as an attempt to bypass India’s tariffs.

During the interview, Trump recalled his discussions with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to the United States, where he pointed out the significant tariffs on car imports. Both leaders have agreed to work towards an early trade agreement to address these concerns.

While in the U.S., Prime Minister Modi met with Musk, who has been vocal about India’s high import duties on electric vehicles, which can reach around 100%. These tariffs help protect local companies like Tata Motors in a market where the adoption of electric vehicles is still in the early stages.

Trump underscored the challenges for Musk to sell cars in India, stating, “Every country in the world takes advantage of us, and they do it with tariffs." He emphasized that this makes it almost impossible to sell cars in the Indian market.

Earlier this year, the Indian government did introduce a new electric vehicle policy, which reduces import taxes to 15% for car manufacturers willing to invest at least $500 million to build a factory in India. Despite this, Trump expressed his belief that building a factory in India would be unfair to the U.S. “If he built the factory in India, that’s okay, but that’s unfair to us. It’s very unfair,” he stated during the interview.

India’s foreign ministry has not yet commented on Trump’s remarks.

Trump’s Tariff Strategy

Trump’s proposal for reciprocal tariffs on countries that tax U.S. imports raises concerns about a potential global trade war. His idea is to impose tariffs that match the rates other countries set on American goods. “Whatever they charge, we’ll charge. And you know what? They stop,” he said, indicating that this strategy might lead to changes in foreign tariff policies.

Tesla’s Market Plans

Sources suggest that Tesla might make its entrance into the Indian market by April this year. The company has reportedly chosen locations for two showrooms in New Delhi and Mumbai and is actively hiring for several mid-level positions in India.

However, as of now, Tesla does not manufacture any vehicles within India. The company has faced various challenges regarding localized manufacturing, regulatory processes, and significant import taxes while seeking to establish itself in the Indian electric vehicle market. Tesla continues to advocate for favorable policies and lower import duties to support its entry into this burgeoning market.

Washington DC: President Donald Trump has voiced concerns regarding Tesla’s potential plans to open a factory in India shortly after the electric vehicle company began hiring staff in the country.
