This alarming news was shared by the agency’s new executive director, Luke J. Lindberg, who emphasized that many of these individuals have been detained for nearly two years.

Lindberg spoke about the risks faced by WFP workers, who often operate in some of the world’s most dangerous areas. He highlighted the critical need to ensure their safety as they strive to provide essential humanitarian assistance.

“Our colleagues are there to help meet basic needs, not to take sides in any conflict,” Lindberg stated, stressing the importance of their protection and the urgency of securing their release.

He clarified that all the detained individuals are Yemeni nationals employed locally by the WFP, many of whom have been separated from their families for a long time. “It’s heartbreaking that they have been away from their families for almost two years,” he expressed.

Lindberg pointed out the complex political situation in Yemen, noting that currently, no American citizens are involved among those detained. He has already raised concerns about this issue with U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, calling attention to the need to prioritize the release of these workers.

The ongoing civil war in Yemen has created a dire humanitarian crisis, with millions relying on aid as economic conditions worsen. Over 18 million people in the country are grappling with acute food insecurity, including over two million young children who are suffering from severe malnutrition.

“The challenges our team faces are unimaginable,” Lindberg remarked. He praised the bravery of WFP staff working under difficult conditions to deliver food and nourishment to those in need.

Balancing the need to reach vulnerable communities with ensuring employee safety is a primary challenge for the WFP. Lindberg noted, “There are areas we cannot enter right now to protect our staff while we continue to find ways to deliver assistance.”

The struggle for food security extends beyond Yemen. Lindberg highlighted that two-thirds of acute food insecurity worldwide is driven by conflict, affecting approximately 266 million people globally.

He emphasized the urgent crises in countries like Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia, where ongoing conflicts and climate impacts are pushing communities towards famine. The situation in Sudan, with millions displaced due to fighting, will be Lindberg’s first area of focus as he begins his tenure.

Additionally, humanitarian efforts in regions like Gaza and Haiti are compromised by violence and logistical challenges. With the ongoing conflicts disrupting food supply and assistance, Lindberg also stressed the need for a more secure environment for humanitarian workers who have faced increasing fatalities in recent years.

“Over 700 humanitarians have lost their lives in recent times while doing their crucial work,” he said, advocating for a strong commitment to protect those on the front lines of the humanitarian response.

As Lindberg steps into his role, he recognizes the importance of addressing the serious challenges facing the WFP and its mission to alleviate hunger around the world, insisting on the need to focus on the essential task of providing food to those in need, irrespective of political dynamics.

WFP Calls for Release of Detained Workers in Yemen The World Food Programme (WFP) revealed that 37 of its staff members are currently being held captive by Houthi militants in Yemen.
