Despite these alarming statistics, the study also found that taking prescribed ADHD medication might help reduce this risk significantly.

The research team examined data from 19 studies that included nearly 16 million people from various continents to understand the long-term effects of ADHD. The review looked at various causes of death, including unnatural ones like accidents and suicide, as well as natural causes such as heart disease and diabetes. Overall, individuals with ADHD showed higher mortality rates across all categories.

Joshua Stott, a senior author and professor at University College London (UCL), stated, “Our findings show that individuals with ADHD face increased risks beyond just suicide and accidents. They are also more likely to die from natural causes, highlighting the wide-ranging health disparities they experience.”

The analysis revealed that the risk of suicide was almost doubled for those with ADHD, showing an 89% increase, while the chance of dying from unintentional injuries surged by 55%. Furthermore, there was a reported 27% higher risk of death from natural causes, often linked to lifestyle factors such as smoking and difficulties in managing chronic health conditions.

Interestingly, the study indicated that those who took prescribed ADHD medications had a 25% lower risk of death from any cause compared to those who did not receive treatment. This suggests that proper medical treatment could alleviate some health risks associated with ADHD and improve overall wellbeing.

Stott emphasized the importance of accessible diagnosis and treatment. “ADHD isn’t inherently a life-threatening condition. With the right support, individuals can lead long and healthy lives,” he noted.

While these findings raise important points, researchers highlighted some limitations. The studies reviewed were observational, which means they can show correlations but not direct causes of health outcomes. The results varied significantly across different studies due to diverse factors such as diagnostic criteria and individual access to healthcare.

Lucy Corrigan, the first author and a research assistant at the University of Liverpool, pointed out that while the findings suggest medications could be beneficial, they are based on a smaller number of studies. “It’s essential to recognize that medication is just one piece of the puzzle; many people with ADHD thrive with comprehensive, long-term treatment and support,” she added.

Overall, these insights underscore the complexities surrounding ADHD and the critical need for further research to fully understand the connections between treatment, health risks, and overall mortality.

New Study Highlights Increased Risks for Individuals with ADHD According to a recent review published in JAMA Network Open, people diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have a 71% higher risk of dying early compared to individuals without this condition.
