Having missed out on selection for the Indian team and sitting out his side’s recent match, Shami was ready to address the media. His responses were often measured, with a touch of humor, especially when he sensed attempts to draw him into controversy. However, he didn’t shy away from sharing his thoughts on fitness and workload.

Shami challenged the idea that outsiders could fairly judge how long he should bowl. “How can anyone watching from the outside decide my bowling spells? It depends on the match situation and what the team needs,” he said, responding to criticism about short spells in domestic matches, sometimes as short as three overs. The 36-year-old emphasized that bowler changes are based on team strategy and pitch conditions, not just on an individual’s physical condition.

“For example, on a pitch like today, can you really expect a fast bowler to just bowl five or ten overs? If it’s tough for batsmen, I’ll bowl; if we need a spinner, then he’ll take over. It’s all about the game situation and the captain’s decision,” Shami explained.

On whether age impacted his fitness, Shami was clear: “I’m still in my prime. There’s no question about that. I’m performing at my best.”

Why Shami Missed the Match

Shami did not play in Bengal’s second Ranji Trophy game, even though teammates Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar were away on international duty. He had previously performed well in the season opener, taking four wickets for 30 runs against Delhi.

His absence from the game raised eyebrows, especially since he had just been passed over for India’s Test series in New Zealand. Bengal’s coach, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, clarified that Shami had opted for rest after a heavy workload in his previous match. Shukla described him as a “cheetah” and emphasized that giving younger players a chance was crucial.

After the match against Services, Shami pointed out that the condition of the pitch didn’t warrant his participation. “You could tell the pitch was tricky. It wouldn’t have made sense for me to play just a couple of overs. It’s better for the youngsters to gain experience,” he said.

Even though he didn’t play, Shami remained an active presence, training and advising teammates throughout the match. He practiced batting and engaged with the team, dispelling any rumors about his commitment.

Looking Ahead to Future Opportunities

Shami’s comments come after another missed chance to return to the Indian squad, as he was not selected for the New Zealand Tests or the India A matches. Last season, he impressed with 37 wickets in seven Ranji matches, averaging 16.72 and achieving three five-wicket hauls.

Despite his solid domestic performances, Shami expressed no disappointment about the selection decisions. “It’s not about being upset. My goal is to play as much as possible in upcoming tournaments,” he said.

Shami viewed his continued participation in domestic matches as essential preparation for future competitions, including the Indian Premier League (IPL). “The more I play, the better my rhythm. Being part of the team keeps the atmosphere positive,” he noted.

His Standing and Aspirations

When asked if he still considers himself among India’s best fast bowlers, he refrained from self-promotion, stating, “That’s for you all to decide. My job is to give my best for my team.”

Regarding communication with national selectors, he kept his response brief: “I’m not part of the team or under contract. Why would anyone talk to me?”

Shami voiced his support for Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to the Indian squad, believing he deserved to be included sooner based on recent performances. He even joked about the media trying to stir up controversy.

As for the future, particularly the 2027 ODI World Cup, Shami remains cautious. “I don’t look that far ahead. One never knows what can happen. Focus on current matches and keep improving,” he advised.

However, when it came to his desire to represent India again, Shami’s response was clear: “Why would I lose hope? Hope should always be there. You should always have goals.”

Commitment to Bengal

For Shami, playing domestic cricket is about more than just seeking a return to international cricket. He emphasized the importance of Bengal in his journey. “This team gave me my name. All this attention I receive comes from being part of Bengal. I want to finish my career here,” he expressed.

“As long as I keep working hard and remain loyal, that’s what matters. The rest I can’t control. Just keep playing—that’s my mindset.”

Currently, Shami is focused on contributing to Bengal, maintaining his form while waiting for the next opportunity to showcase his talent.

Mohammed Shami Discusses His Fitness and Future After Missing India Selection Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami faced reporters after Bengal’s Ranji Trophy victory over Services, fully aware that tough questions were on the agenda.
