This situation, described as a “software tax,” leads to unnecessary costs and operational challenges as companies rush to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. The survey, conducted by Origina, a software maintenance provider, included responses from over 2,000 companies.

Origina’s CEO, Tomas O’Leary, remarked that the pressure to accept unwanted upgrades often comes from the risk of losing support for critical systems. “Often, agreeing to updates that are not ideal becomes a rational choice when the alternative is losing vital support,” O’Leary explained.

The survey revealed some concerning trends:

A staggering 95% of respondents admitted they upgraded software despite predicting worse outcomes.

80% felt that shifting away from a major software vendor would create significant disruption to their business.

Nearly 84% of senior engineering staff often find their time diverted to mandatory software changes, which takes focus away from innovation and business-relevant projects.

An alarming 91% reported having to retire fully functional hardware in the past three years, exiting equipment before its useful life ended to meet vendor support deadlines.

O’Leary noted that this issue is widespread and affects companies globally, especially older ones with established technology infrastructures which face greater challenges.

The financial impact is notable as well. The most recent vendor-driven software change incurred an average annual cost of $12.87 million for the companies surveyed.

These findings underscore the growing concern over vendor influence in the software market and its real implications for business operations.

Survey Reveals High Costs of Vendor-Driven Software Changes for Businesses Recent findings highlight that major companies in the United States and the United Kingdom allocate an average of 28% of their software budgets to vendor-driven upgrades, migrations, and licensing changes they did not actively choose.
