The study involved over 187,000 adults aged 50 and older and highlights that those with ADHD might face a significantly higher chance of developing dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

The observational study analyzed participants’ electronic health records and genetic information through the U.S. National Institutes of Health All of Us Research Program. Findings revealed that cognitive impairment affected 6.7% of adults with ADHD, compared to just 3.4% of those without the disorder, nearly doubling the rate among those with ADHD. When researchers took into account factors like age and gender, they found that individuals with ADHD had more than four times the risk of cognitive issues.

Although the findings, published on October 7 in JAMA Psychiatry, suggest a link, the researchers cautioned that they do not prove that ADHD directly causes dementia. Senior author Tharick A. Pascoal emphasized that the data reflects a consistent trend observed in medical records and genetic studies, leading to increased confidence in the results.

Additionally, individuals with a high genetic predisposition to ADHD were found to have a 35% greater risk of developing dementia compared to those with the lowest genetic susceptibility. “By looking at genetic data alongside health records, we can spot patterns that might be missed in smaller studies,” explained Guilherme Bauer-Negrini, a co-author involved in the research.

Understanding the Connection

Dr. Elizabeth Landsverk, a geriatric medicine expert, noted that individuals with ADHD often struggle with organization, which may contribute to a higher risk of cognitive decline. These challenges can make it harder for them to manage health issues and seek medical care effectively. Landsverk, who was not involved in the study, explained that difficulties in keeping track of appointments or following through with healthcare recommendations could further complicate their health status.

Moreover, the study found that people with ADHD made 20% more use of health services, which might be attributed to their challenges in navigating complex healthcare systems.

Distinguishing ADHD from Dementia

Landsverk highlighted that distinguishing between ADHD symptoms and cognitive decline can be tricky, as both can manifest similarly. If a person is consistently having trouble with daily tasks, such as forgetting appointments or misplacing items, it may be a sign to seek further evaluation.

“Signs of serious issues include an inability to handle bills, medications, or appointments,” she noted. Changes in mood, judgment, and social interactions may also be more indicative of dementia than ADHD.

Ways to Reduce Risk

While the study established an association between ADHD and cognitive decline, Landsverk stressed that certain lifestyle choices can reduce the risk of dementia. Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and engaging in regular physical activity are essential steps individuals can take. She also emphasized the importance of managing blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes effectively.

“There’s plenty we can do,” she suggested, recommending a diet rich in vegetables and fruits along with at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Regular physical activity not only contributes to overall health but can also improve mood and concentration.

Anyone facing ongoing challenges with memory, focus, or daily organization should consider consulting a healthcare professional for a thorough assessment to identify potential issues.

Study Suggests ADHD May Be Linked to Increased Risk of Dementia Recent research from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine indicates a potential connection between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and dementia risk.
