Daniil Medvedev’s journey at the China Open came to a shocking end when he was disqualified during his semifinal match against Novak Djokovic. The incident unfolded on Monday, as Medvedev, feeling frustrated, hit a ball into the stands. Unfortunately, it struck a spectator, causing an injury.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred while Djokovic was serving at 7-5, 5-3 in the match. After a point, Medvedev, upset over the play, swatted the ball toward the back of the court. It traveled into the front row and hit a fan near the left eye. Medical assistance was immediately provided to the injured spectator, and after a discussion among officials, Medvedev was defaulted from the match.<\/p>\n
Djokovic expressed his shock after the match, saying, \u201cI hope the person isn\u2019t badly injured. But at the same time, I feel bad for Daniil. I\u2019m sure he didn\u2019t mean to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
This unexpected incident marred what had been an exciting semifinal match. Djokovic had taken the first set 7-5 and was leading in the second when Medvedev’s frustration escalated. With Djokovic just a game away from advancing to the final, the match came to an abrupt halt.<\/p>\n
Despite the bizarre ending, Djokovic maintained his perfect record at the China Open, extending it to 33 wins and no losses. The 39-year-old has a storied history in Beijing, having won the tournament six times prior from 2009 to 2015. This year marked his return after an 11-year absence.<\/p>\n
Djokovic had already showcased his determination by overcoming top seed Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals, coming back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. He will next face Alex de Minaur in the final. De Minaur secured his spot after Hubert Hurkacz retired during their semifinal match, having lost the first set 6-4 and was trailing in the second.<\/p>\n
The final will offer Djokovic the chance to secure his seventh title at the China Open and mark his first trophy of 2026. If he triumphs over de Minaur, it will also be his 102nd career ATP title.<\/p>\n
