While AI brings excitement with its possibilities, it also poses important questions about ethics, safety, and its effects on society.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Science and Technology Daily held a panel discussion titled &quot;Tech with Heart, AI for Good,&quot; focusing on how AI can empower individuals, overcome human limitations, and the importance of having strict guidelines to keep it safe and effective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Role of AI in Our Lives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AI is changing how we live, work, and connect with one another. According to Zeng Yi, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an advisor for the United Nations on AI, the goal of AI development is to relieve people from tedious tasks. &quot;When we combine AI with robotics, we can focus more on creative and fulfilling work,&quot; Zeng explained. He noted that AI-driven robots are now being used in dangerous jobs like firefighting, disaster response, and even space missions, where they perform tasks that would be too risky for humans.<\/p>\n<p>AI&#8217;s benefits extend to environmental conservation, such as monitoring wildlife. In daily life, Gao Shaolin, an expert at Peking University\u2019s AI Research Center, shared a remarkable experience from a recent road trip. He traveled 3,000 kilometers on highways without encountering a single traffic accident, thanks to the improved AI safety features in modern cars. Innovations like fatigue monitoring systems in trucks and self-driving technologies in electric vehicles are greatly enhancing road safety.<\/p>\n<p>Both Zeng and Gao agreed that AI should complement human skills, not replace them. AI&#8217;s aim should be to expand our capabilities, allowing for greater creativity and innovation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Importance of Responsible AI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With AI&#8217;s rapid growth, issues of accountability come to the forefront. Zeng drew attention to Berkeley&#8217;s warning: &quot;It&#8217;s often easier to create a device than to manage it well afterward.&quot; This highlights the need for innovators to consider potential risks along with technological advancements.<\/p>\n<p>A crucial question arises: Who takes responsibility for problems caused by AI? Gao stressed that AI is not an independent entity; rather, it is a tool created by people, and therefore, the onus of responsibility lies with its developers and users. &quot;AI should be as smart as needed, but it must always remain under human supervision,&quot; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Wu Baojun, from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized the need for AI advancements to be matched with efforts to ensure reliability and ethical standards. &quot;Our AI research focuses on navigating unknown areas, alleviating fears, and enhancing AI reliability,&quot; he stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China&#8217;s Vision for AI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>China is taking a progressive approach to AI development, ensuring the balance between innovation and ethical considerations. Matt Sheehan of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace highlighted how China is leading in establishing detailed regulations for artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, China rolled out the Next Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan, promoting various AI methodologies while stressing the importance of ethical governance. The introduction of the Beijing AI Principles in May 2019 outlined clear guidelines for responsible AI research, emphasizing privacy and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>These initiatives were bolstered in July 2024 when the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proposed by China, focusing on human-centered AI development and international cooperation for the benefit of all humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Zeng noted that China&#8217;s AI strategy aims not just for domestic growth but also seeks to empower all of humanity towards sustainable goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global Consensus on AI Principles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The global community is prioritizing responsible AI governance. Zeng pointed out that many countries share similar ethics in AI, focusing on human-centered development, transparency, fairness, safety, and privacy protection.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, a significant agreement on AI safety was reached when 28 countries and the European Union signed the Bletchley Declaration, marking a shared commitment to tackle AI safety globally.
