A country’s diaspora can be a source of pride and strength. People from a nation living abroad often share their success stories, enhance the country’s cultural image, and contribute to its economy through sending money home, investing, and sharing their skills and knowledge.<\/p>\n
India and China are home to some of the largest diasporas worldwide, each showcasing different ways their countries benefit from citizens living abroad.<\/p>\n
In India, the perspective on the diaspora has changed dramatically over the years. Before economic reforms in 1991, many viewed those who emigrated as a loss of talent, or a “brain drain.” However, following the liberalization of the economy, the narrative shifted. The Indian diaspora began to be recognized as a crucial link to foreign investment, technology, and global trade opportunities. To better support Indians living overseas, the Indian government established a dedicated ministry in 2004, which later merged with the Ministry of External Affairs in 2016 to enhance coordination and support for its diaspora.
