This nationwide crackdown began on Sunday, leading to the arrest of around 116 individuals across 15 provinces involved with LGBT rights organizations. Amnesty International reports that investigations have also been launched against more than 160 people.

In addition, 180 social media accounts linked to LGBT activists, journalists, and organizations have been blocked or restricted, according to the same report.

Esther Major, Deputy Regional Director for Europe at Amnesty International, highlighted the severity of the situation, calling it a significant violation of rights. She stated that the government’s actions, framed as protecting families, only serve to further harm LGBT individuals and those standing up for their rights.

Turkey’s Minister of Justice, Akın Gürlek, communicated through social media that the government will continue to protect families and children from all supposed threats. He mentioned that directives had been sent out to public prosecutor’s offices nationwide to target content the government deems contrary to “public morality.”

This emphasis on traditional values aligns with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s broader strategy to promote population growth and family stability, which many view as a way for him to reinforce his legacy as he nears another election in 2028.

Analysts have noted that Erdogan’s focus on family values helps him frame the LGBT community as a threat, portraying them as a foreign influence counter to traditional Turkish culture. With protests against the government’s actions already emerging, the crackdown continues despite growing international criticism.

Peaceful demonstrators faced police action in various cities, including the use of pepper spray in İzmir. More than 95 protesters were detained during a gathering outside a courthouse in Istanbul.

The European Commission has expressed concern over the recent events, emphasizing Turkey’s obligation as an EU candidate to uphold human rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation. However, responses from the Turkish embassy in Washington and the U.S. Embassy in Ankara on these issues went unanswered.

Turkish authorities have taken strong actions against the LGBT community, raiding gay bars and closing down activist groups to uphold what the government claims are Turkey’s family values.
