According to defense experts, this missile may also have advanced maneuvering abilities.

Vadym Skibitskyi, the deputy head of Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence, stated that Russia is likely to conduct these final tests by the end of the year, possibly even using live-fire examples. He noted that the new missile may have a range of up to 800 kilometers.

Tom Karako, director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, explained that if the missile can maneuver more effectively, it will pose a bigger challenge for Ukraine, which would need more sophisticated interceptors to counter it.

The possibility also exists that Russia has found a way to produce this new missile more economically or in larger quantities. Advances in precision engineering may play a role in the type of missile being tested.

Ukraine has already faced significant missile and drone strikes from Russia since the war began in 2022. Reports indicate that since the start of 2026, Russia has launched over 1,800 missiles of various kinds against Ukrainian targets.

Karako added that with the men’s demand for increased firepower, it’s normal to see new missile types appear, especially in wartime conditions. He warned that some of these tests might take place in Ukraine itself as part of the standard development process in military settings.

He also noted that the missile would fall within a range that was previously banned under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, a landmark agreement from 1987 that limited missile ranges. The treaty was essentially invalidated when the U.S. pulled out in 2019, citing Russian violations.

As missile production ramps up, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointed to the increased strain on Ukraine’s air defenses, especially as winter approaches. He expressed the urgent need for more interceptor missiles to handle the challenging months ahead.

The ongoing conflict has seen all kinds of military tactics and strategies from Russia, pushing Ukraine to adapt and respond, especially with the constant threat posed by missiles. Concerns are mounting not just in Ukraine, but also among neighboring countries, as they remain vigilant about Russia’s military intentions.

Russia’s New Ballistic Missile Test Could Increase Threat to Ukraine Moscow is gearing up for a key test of a new ballistic missile that has the potential to reach targets hundreds of miles away, raising concerns about the capabilities of Ukraine’s air defenses.
