Central to this initiative is the belief that every nation should have a role and an equal opportunity to participate in global governance.

Xi has emphasized that world issues shouldn’t just be handled by the most powerful nations. He stated, “World affairs should be open to discussion by everyone, and the rules we follow should be set collaboratively.” He pointed out that allowing only a select few to dictate international matters is an outdated form of governance and not genuine multilateralism.

He stressed the importance of the Global South, saying that these nations play a crucial role in a multipolar world and should have a more significant presence and influence in international discussions.

Over the years, platforms like the SCO and BRICS have become essential for these countries to express their views, collaborate on shared interests, and strengthen their collective power. Their increasing unity can be observed in their responses to global events. For instance, SCO member states recently voiced their concerns about the situation in the Middle East and the conflict involving Iran.

Xi has also been advocating for better governance of the global economy. In 2014, he and other leaders from BRICS established the New Development Bank, providing a new source of funding for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets and developing countries. During the recent SCO summit, members reiterated the need to establish the SCO Development Bank.

Moving forward, the push for a greater influence is extending into innovative areas that will shape the future. In July, Xi announced the formation of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, urging joint efforts to establish a fair and inclusive approach to global AI governance.

He highlighted the need for extensive international collaboration and support for Global South countries to help them close the gaps in AI technology and foster sustainable development, while also preventing new forms of inequality.

Additionally, China is fostering cooperation among Global South nations through initiatives like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the China-ASEAN summit.

Xi has consistently stated that China is a proud member of the Global South and will remain committed to its development objectives. He famously expressed, “Regardless of how the world changes, we will always prioritize the Global South and uphold our connections to these countries.”

As the countries of the Global South continue to grow in influence, it’s becoming increasingly important for them to have a stronger voice in global matters.
