This news arrives just ahead of a scheduled meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month, although China has not finalized the exact date for this discussion.

In July, the country had already seen its exports increase by 23.9% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, imports also saw significant growth, climbing 28.2% in August, up from a 27.5% increase in July. This growth in trade resulted in a trade surplus of $119.1 billion for China, which is up from $112.5 billion the previous month.

Chi Lo, a senior market strategist at BNP Paribas Asset Management, commented, “China is very competitive when it comes to exporting tech goods.” The nation has been exporting more electric vehicles, industrial machinery, and semiconductors, which have supported its strong export figures worldwide. “China has moved up the value chain aggressively and has taken a strong position in AI infrastructure and industrial automation,” he added.

Additionally, China has managed to navigate challenges from conflicts like the war in Iran more effectively than many other countries. The nation has also increased exports to Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa, helping to shield itself from the impacts of high tariffs set by the U.S.

This growing trade surplus has raised concerns in both the U.S. and Europe, as it reached a record high of $1.2 trillion last year. Trade issues are expected to be a significant topic in the upcoming meeting between Trump and Xi. However, experts believe that the broader strategic tensions between the U.S. and China are likely to persist. “Both countries are interdependent on certain strategic products,” noted Lo, explaining that the U.S. has restricted high-tech exports to China while China has limited its rare-earth exports to the U.S.

On the European front, China and the EU will convene for trade discussions this fall, as the EU seeks to address its substantial trade deficit with China, estimated at around 1 billion euros daily. Earlier in July, the EU had taken steps to protect its steel industry and restricted tax-exempt imports of small packages from Chinese e-commerce.

Domestically, China is still facing economic challenges, with consumer spending and investment remaining slow following a prolonged downturn in the real estate market. In response, the Chinese government announced a plan to inject approximately $54 billion into state banks and insurance companies in hopes of revitalizing the economy.

BANGKOK – In August, China’s exports surged by 25% compared to the same month last year, driven by strong demand for vehicles and high-tech products, as reported by the country’s customs agency on Tuesday.
