As businesses continue to expand beyond borders, it’s clear that while technical skills are important, the ability to communicate effectively is what truly opens doors.

This understanding is the foundation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka’s (CA Sri Lanka) latest initiative—the School of Business Languages. Launched recently under the theme “Connecting the Profession to the World through Languages,” this school aims to prepare professionals for a more interconnected global landscape.

Bridging Language and Business

The School of Business Languages will blend language learning with real-world business applications, aiming to foster more opportunities for professionals to engage and grow on an international scale. This initiative aligns with CA Sri Lanka President Tishan Subasinghe’s vision, themed “CONNECT,” which emphasizes strengthening ties between the accounting profession, businesses, the community, and the global marketplace.

In today’s fast-paced business environment, opportunities that once seemed out of reach are now more accessible. Whether in negotiations or client interactions, having technical knowledge is crucial, but being able to communicate effectively across cultures is equally vital.

“Preparing our professionals for the future means equipping them with the knowledge they need and the confidence to communicate,” says President Subasinghe. “In a connected world, language skills and effective communication are essential for professional success.”

New Language Offerings for Professionals

Understanding the importance of communication, the School of Business Languages plans to offer programs such as Business English, Chinese for Finance Professionals, Arabic for Finance Professionals, and French for Finance Professionals. These courses will focus not only on language learning but also on cultural understanding, which is crucial in today’s diverse business environment.

“While expertise builds credibility, the ability to communicate builds opportunity,” Subasinghe noted, highlighting the importance of language skills in cultivating global partnerships.

Welcoming All Professionals

While the School is primarily aimed at CA Sri Lanka members, its programs will also be open to non-members. This inclusive approach highlights the organization’s commitment to enhancing the skills of professionals across various sectors, thereby contributing to the overall growth of Sri Lanka’s workforce.

Additionally, the School will offer scholarships to support public sector professionals who need language skills for international diplomacy and business.

Investing in Future Generations

CA Sri Lanka’s vision extends to the youth as well. The organization is launching StepUp English, a free initiative for students aged 15 and up, aimed at improving their English language skills. This online program provides an accessible learning platform for students across the country, supporting their educational and career prospects.

“By providing free English language opportunities, we’re helping young people unlock new horizons for education and employment,” Subasinghe explained.

A Commitment to Growth and Connection

For decades, CA Sri Lanka has prioritized technical excellence in the accounting profession. The establishment of the School of Business Languages marks a significant shift towards recognizing the importance of communication in today’s interconnected world.

For Chartered Accountants working with multinational companies or in international markets, the ability to speak multiple languages and navigate different cultures has become an invaluable asset. By enhancing these skills, professionals can build stronger relationships and engage more effectively across borders.

President Subasinghe summarized this vision by saying, “While technology can connect us, true understanding and trust come from meaningful communication.”

The School of Business Languages represents an exciting opportunity for professionals to broaden their horizons, for businesses to forge stronger international ties, and for Sri Lanka to become more adept at engaging with the world. In an era where ideas cross geographic boundaries, the individuals who succeed will be those who understand not just the numbers but also the language of opportunity.

CA Sri Lanka Launches School of Business Languages to Enhance Global Communication In today’s world, valuable opportunities are not just found in one place; they’re created wherever people, ideas, and markets come together.
