BOWLING GREEN, Ky. \u2013 September is designated as Suicide Awareness Month, a time to shed light on a critical issue facing many in the U.S. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide ranks as the 10th leading cause of death nationwide.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Kentucky Hospital Association highlights that Kentucky has been grappling with a mental health crisis for over ten years. In response to this growing concern, Governor Andy Beshear signed House Bills 169 and 178 in April, which expand insurance coverage for individuals dealing with mental health conditions and eating disorders.<\/strong><\/p>\n Data from the National Alliance on Mental Illness reveals that individuals aged 18 to 29 are nine times more likely to reach out for help via the 9-8-8 hotline compared to those aged 65 and older, including many college students.<\/strong><\/p>\n Professor Jay Gabbard, a social work instructor at Western Kentucky University, emphasizes the struggles that college students face regarding their mental health, a situation that has worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/strong><\/p>\n Gabbard shared his own experiences, stating, \u201cIn my early 20s, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and panic disorder, and I even attempted suicide.\u201d He explained that after this difficult moment, he found a new purpose in life: helping others who are struggling.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cGoing through recovery, taking medication, seeing a therapist, and joining support groups inspired me to pursue a career in social work,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n His message is clear: you are not alone. \u201cYou are wanted, loved, and needed in this world.
