Authorities have reported that at least 676 people have died, with the search for survivors complicated by ongoing poor weather conditions.

The floods and mudslides, occurring along the Nepal-China border, have left nearly 3,000 people unaccounted for. In updates provided over the weekend, Nepal’s disaster management agency stated that 669 people are confirmed dead and an additional 2,426 are missing. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have reported seven fatalities and over 550 individuals still unlocated.

Experts suggest the severe flooding and mudslides were triggered by a large section of ice that broke off a glacier, crashing into the Lhende Khola River. Difficulty in accessing the main disaster zones due to damaged roads and communication problems has hindered rescue efforts. As rain is expected to persist throughout the weekend, the situation may worsen.

Narendra Pariyar, an official from Nepal’s Rasuwa district, indicated that search and rescue operations have been temporarily suspended due to rain and foggy conditions.

While Nepal’s officials have stated they do not require international teams for general search efforts, they have asked China for specialized assistance, including tunnel experts, as up to 100 people are still reported trapped in a mud-filled hydropower tunnel. In response, China has sent five rescue workers from Tibet to help.

Authorities have also reported the situation around a lake formed by the floods has improved, which previously posed a risk of further flooding. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, some rescues have taken place, including an instance where a man was pulled from the mud.

Following this disaster, Nepal’s finance minister has estimated that the nation will need more than $4 billion for recovery and rebuilding.

As the search continues amidst these devastating circumstances, authorities remain hopeful for the safe return of those still missing.

Search Efforts Ongoing for Hundreds Missing After Nepal’s Devastating Floods Rescue teams in Nepal continue their search for hundreds of individuals who remain missing following catastrophic floods that have struck the region.
