Jim Serger, 55, from Cincinnati, Ohio, and Cory Hardy, 51, from Ennis, Montana, had not seen each other in three decades since their military days together.

On July 14, they set off on a biking adventure starting from California and heading to New York City. The trip is not only a celebration of their friendship but also a way to honor the sacrifices made by many on that fateful day in September 2001.

Serger, who has written three books for the nonprofit Tunnel to Towers, felt the urge to take on a bigger challenge and reached out to Hardy, an experienced cyclist. “I said, ‘Would you like to go on this trip?’ and he replied, ‘Absolutely, count me in,’” Serger recalled.

Hardy expressed his patriotic feelings, stating that the military has given him many opportunities, including travel and education. He viewed this ride as a meaningful way to keep the memory of 9/11 alive and remind others of its significance, especially as the country celebrates its 250th anniversary.

In preparation for the journey, Serger dedicated ten months to training, logging around 5,000 miles on an indoor trainer before hitting local trails. As they began their trek, they faced numerous challenges, including road closures, adverse weather conditions in Colorado, and even flat tires.

Throughout the journey, both veterans took care to stay hydrated, especially in the heat of California and Arizona. They consumed three gallons of water daily and fueled up with energy bars and carbs to keep their strength up.

As they traveled, the friends maintained a spirit of camaraderie and gratitude. They connected with fellow veterans and stopped at about 25 firehouses along the way, sharing stories and handing out Tunnel to Towers books. “Sometimes we were there for an hour, sometimes four hours, sharing about their experiences on 9/11 and what they do now,” Serger shared.

Both veteran cyclists view their journey as a way to give back to the community. Serger’s wife helps provide meals for local firefighters every month, and Hardy is actively involved in the city council. They received souvenirs like patches and hats from the firefighters, who were eager to help them on their ride, regardless of their political differences.

As they approached key sites related to the 9/11 attacks, the emotional weight of their mission became apparent. Meeting firefighters and hearing personal stories from people who were affected by the attacks added a poignant touch to their expedition.

Upon arriving in Lower Manhattan, they were welcomed by the FDNY and received an emotional tribute at the FDNY Ten House, located across from the 9/11 Memorial. Serger described the overwhelming feelings as they were honored, highlighting the love and pride for their country that they encountered during their ride.

Throughout their expedition, they have raised over $17,000 for Tunnel to Towers, aiming to ensure that the sacrifices made on 9/11 are not forgotten. Serger summed up their journey by saying, “We never want 9/11 to fade away.” Their ride stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of patriotism and community in the face of adversity.

Reunion of Navy Veterans Celebrates Patriotism and Sacrifice with Cross-Country Bike Ride Two Navy veterans have reunited for a memorable journey across the United States, marking a special tribute to the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
