This decision, aimed at maintaining transparency, resulted in a significant drop in IBM’s stock—over 25% in just one day—marking one of the largest declines in the company’s history.

In an interview with CRN, Krishna explained that he felt it was important to reveal IBM’s struggles early due to shifts in enterprise IT budgeting and distractions from rising artificial intelligence trends. With just eight days to go before the earnings call on July 22, Krishna decided to announce that the tech giant would miss its quarterly earnings expectations. According to him, this unexpected financial shortfall is linked to clients delaying infrastructure projects in order to prioritize spending on hardware, in light of supply chain issues and increasing costs.

Krishna attributed part of IBM’s challenges to a diversion of customer focus caused by security discussions surrounding an AI model from Anthropic. Consequently, he reduced the company’s revenue growth expectations for the year by more than $600 million, acknowledging that many clients are postponing infrastructure projects to cover the costs associated with constrained supplies of memory, storage, servers, and other essential data center equipment.

Rather than waiting for the official earnings cycle, Krishna relied on his guiding principle of addressing difficult matters sooner rather than later. He stated, “If there’s a hard thing to be done, do it earlier rather than later,” during the interview. By proactively sharing the bad news, he aimed to shift the focus of the upcoming earnings call from explanations of past decisions to solutions and future strategies.

Krishna’s decision reflects the intense pressure IBM is under as it invests heavily in areas like generative AI and long-term quantum computing while trying to meet immediate expectations from investors. When discussing the potential for heightened scrutiny from shareholders or conflicts within the board after such a market reaction, Krishna remained level-headed. He noted that if a company falters, it must always be prepared to face the realities of corporate oversight.

He also pointed out that while investor activists seek better returns for shareholders, it’s essential for CEOs to be ready to engage with them as needed. In Krishna’s view, the focus should remain on client satisfaction and investing in workforce development to safeguard the company’s innovative future.

Addressing the challenges from the recent quarter, Krishna clarified that these issues were more about deferrals rather than outright losses. He expressed optimism, stating that a significant portion of major infrastructure projects, which require substantial client investment, have already been finalized.

IBM’s CEO Arvind Krishna recently made headlines after a bold move to share disappointing financial news ahead of the company’s scheduled earnings report.
