However, he remains hopeful that reclaiming the championship is not out of reach for the club.

Since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, United has struggled to maintain a serious title challenge, having not won the league in over a decade. Yet, there was noticeable progress last season when Carrick took over in January. During his time at the helm, United accumulated 39 points over 17 Premier League matches, outperforming every other team in that stretch.

As the new season kicks off with a match against Hull City this Saturday, Carrick understands that the team must replicate their successful performance across the full season of 38 games to compete against the reigning champions, Arsenal.

“It’s going to be a big leap,” Carrick stated as he prepared for the opening match. “What I say doesn’t really matter; I would never say that it’s impossible for us. We need to focus on what we can achieve as a group.”

Carrick feels that the positive momentum from last season can inspire confidence, but he knows that reaching the next level will require hard work and belief in their capabilities. “We know we can achieve great things, and we’ve got to see ourselves as a good team capable of doing well,” he said.

The fixtures for United’s opening league games are against newly promoted teams, starting with Hull City, followed by a home game against Ipswich Town next week. Despite the seemingly favorable matchups, Carrick dismissed the idea that they have an easy start to the season.

“There are no easy starts,” he asserted. “Facing a newly promoted side away is a tough challenge. It’s easy to suggest otherwise, but that kind of thinking is pretty off-base.”

### CARRICK PRAISES RASHFORD

In positive news, Marcus Rashford is set to make his first appearance for Manchester United since December 2024 during the upcoming match against Hull. After spending 18 months on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona, Rashford has returned to the club, and Carrick has been impressed by his performance in training.

“Since Marcus returned to training alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, it’s clear that he’s come back in fantastic shape,” Carrick noted. “He’s enjoying the game, looking fit and strong, and ready to play. I’m thrilled with how he’s doing.”

Rashford’s versatility will also provide Carrick with more options in attack, as he can play both as a center-forward and on the left wing. Carrick expressed confidence in Rashford’s ability to adapt to different roles within the team.

“Marcus has played through the middle before, and we have other forwards who bring that flexibility as well,” he explained.

Rashford’s return follows a challenging period away from United due to disagreements with previous coach Rben Amorim. He has expressed a desire to focus on football without distractions.

### UNITED LOOKING TO ADD MORE PLAYERS

Manchester United is actively seeking to strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes on September 1. They have already signed Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans and Brazilian international Andrey Santos, while they are keen on Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, for whom they reportedly submitted a £60 million offer.

Carrick confirmed that the club is still making moves to enhance their team before the transfer deadline. “We’re looking to improve the squad,” he mentioned. “We’re trying to seize the opportunities we have to ensure we’re stronger by the end of this window.”

### MOUNT FACES FITNESS TEST

Meanwhile, Mason Mount will undergo a late fitness test ahead of the Hull game after missing the last two pre-season matches due to a minor injury. Carrick reassured fans that “Mason will return soon” and that the situation is not serious.

Additionally, defender Matthijs de Ligt has resumed training after a prolonged absence due to a back injury, but he will not participate in the match against Hull.

As Manchester United embarks on a new Premier League season filled with optimism following last season’s resurgence, Carrick is well aware that a consistent challenge against Arsenal will require even greater efforts from his players.

Michael Carrick has recognized that Manchester United will need to elevate their game significantly if they aim to compete for the Premier League title this season.
