Former acting director of ICE, Jonathan Fahey, shared insights on how these migrants will be identified. He noted that as their protected status expires, these individuals may be urged to voluntarily leave the United States before enforcement actions begin.

In a related development, Liberia announced on Tuesday that it will accept up to 1,200 deportees from the U.S. over the next year. This deal is part of an agreement between the two countries and is one of the largest of its kind during the Trump administration’s focus on tougher immigration enforcement.

According to Liberia’s Information Minister, Jerolinmek Piah, the first group of 20 deportees is expected to arrive on Thursday. The total number of deportees will include individuals from Africa as well as those from North and South America and the Caribbean.

Liberia has stated that the deportees will be welcomed “as guests” and have the option to leave at any time and file for asylum in Liberia. The country plans to receive support from the U.S. to help manage this program and strengthen its immigration system. However, it has clarified that the deal is not a trade-off for anything from the U.S. and is purely a humanitarian effort.

Piah emphasized Liberia’s historical ties to the U.S., pointing to its foundation in the 19th century for freed Black Americans, and the country’s long-standing tradition of offering refuge to those fleeing political or social crises. He stated that the government intends to provide necessary assistance to those arriving, allowing them to seek protection and stay safely.

Liberia’s Justice Minister, Natu Oswald Tweh, confirmed that the migrants have been screened before their arrival. He pointed out that while most of them have faced immigration violations, they are not considered criminals under either U.S. or Liberian law.

Since Trump returned to office last year, his administration has negotiated several agreements with African nations to accept deportees, including individuals with legal protections against being sent back to their home countries due to risks of persecution or abuse, though it’s unclear if any of those being sent to Liberia have this kind of protection.

Rights groups have raised concerns, indicating that some migrants have been sent to countries where they may face safety risks, placing additional pressure on them to return home. Countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Ghana, and Sierra Leone have also participated in accepting third-country deportees.

Brief: ICE to Focus on Haitian Migrants as Temporary Protection Status Ends There are reports that ICE, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, plans to target Haitian migrants soon as their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) comes to an end.
