The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) confirmed that they received reports about To\u00f1i’s condition on August 11, thanks to the marine conservation group WeWhale, which works in the area with government backing. Following this, authorities began a preliminary investigation to uncover what happened and identify those responsible.<\/p>\n
While officials haven’t confirmed that To\u00f1i was shot, both WeWhale and the Iberian Orca Guardians suspect that the nature and pattern of her injuries indicate possible gunfire. Notably, they stated that the wounds appeared suddenly, highlighting the worry for To\u00f1i’s health. WeWhale staff observed around ten noticeable puncture marks on the left side of her dorsal fin, with several projectiles possibly embedded inside.<\/p>\n
At around 60 years old, To\u00f1i is particularly vulnerable to complications from these injuries. The fin plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature and has a rich blood supply, making infection a serious concern. Currently, however, there are some positive signs, as To\u00f1i seems to be swimming and hunting normally.<\/p>\n
Janek Andre, founder of WeWhale, emphasized the shocking nature of the situation, stating, \u201cWe were with To\u00f1i a few weeks ago, and the wounds were not there. If someone shot her, it\u2019s not just cruel to one animal; it\u2019s an attack on a declining species.\u201d<\/p>\n
To\u00f1i, affectionately known as “La Abuela,” is a significant member of her population, which is already classified as vulnerable in the Strait of Gibraltar and Gulf of C\u00e1diz. Spanish wildlife laws are strict regarding the protection of endangered species, and those found guilty of harming To\u00f1i could face hefty fines up to 2 million euros (approximately $2.3 million) and possible criminal charges.<\/p>\n
This investigation appears timely as there have been numerous reports of interactions between Iberian orcas and boats in the area over the last few years, prompting officials to issue safety guidelines for boaters to avoid harming the animals.<\/p>\n
