Surprisingly, no gym membership is necessary.

Research from the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital shows that individuals who regularly climb stairs can lower their risk of dying from heart-related issues by 39% and from any cause by 24% compared to those who don’t. This analysis examined data from nearly 1,900 studies involving over 480,000 participants aged 35 to 84, combining both healthy individuals and those with existing heart conditions.

Climbing stairs is not just a good workout; it may also help prevent major heart problems like heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure. According to Vassilios Vassiliou from UEA’s Norwich Medical School, cardiovascular disease remains the top cause of death globally, with cases almost doubling from 1990 to 2019.

While the study shows a connection between stair climbing and a reduced risk of death, it’s important to note that it does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Nevertheless, this favorite form of exercise offers an excellent low-impact option that engages several muscle groups while enhancing both cardiovascular and muscle strength.

Interestingly, the research suggests that climbing around six flights of stairs daily could provide significant health advantages. However, researchers are still working to discover the best amount of stair climbing for overall wellness. They found that even small increases in the number of stairs climbed can lead to better health outcomes.

With more than a quarter of adults worldwide not meeting the recommended activity levels, it’s crucial to find accessible ways to stay active. Sedentary lifestyles, smoking, unhealthy diets, and obesity all play a significant role in heart disease.

Climbing stairs is a free and convenient form of exercise that can easily be included in daily activities, whether at home, work, or out in public. Researchers encourage even brief periods of physical activity, like stair climbing, to be seen as attainable goals for integrating movement into everyday life.

However, they do advise caution: stair climbing may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with mobility challenges or joint problems. The results of this study were published in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs.

A new study highlights a simple daily activity that could significantly reduce the risk of dying early, especially from heart disease.
