On Saturday, the Indian community in Parsippany gathered for a lively Independence Day celebration with special significance this year. The event marked two important milestones: India\u2019s 80th anniversary of independence from British rule and the United States\u2019 250th birthday.<\/p>\n
Organized by the New Jersey Indian American Association, the celebration attracted a large crowd, including Mayor Pulkit Desai, who is Parsippany’s first mayor of Indian descent.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels absolutely fantastic. I\u2019m getting goosebumps here right now,\u201d Desai expressed. \u201cWe wanted to celebrate both America\u2019s 250 years and India\u2019s 80 years because we are a part of this community and should embrace both cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n
The festivities began with a diya lighting ceremony, followed by the singing of the U.S. National Anthem and the raising of both the Indian and American flags. The day was filled with traditional singing and dancing, delicious food, and numerous vendors showcasing Indian culture.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful day. It\u2019s a great chance to celebrate together as Indians,\u201d said Rakesh Desai from Parsippany. \u201cEven though we\u2019re far from India, today feels like home.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell also joined in the celebration, adding to the festive atmosphere.<\/p>\n
For many attendees, the event represented more than just cultural pride; it was a moment to honor their dual heritage.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis place has given us so many opportunities,\u201d remarked Dr. Manish Shashi from Morris Plains. \u201cIt\u2019s heartwarming to see such celebrations happening far away from our homeland, in a place we now call home.\u201d
