This comes after social media sparked renewed calls for Moroccan migrants to attempt to cross into Ceuta, echoing a large wave of migration that occurred in July.

On Friday, soldiers patrolled key areas in Ceuta, including commercial and government buildings, while local police were visibly present on the main streets, according to a report by Reuters. Meanwhile, in the Moroccan town of Fnideq, security forces in black uniforms monitored the nearby beaches, which were previously used by migrants to enter Ceuta during the July rush that saw over 70,000 people cross the border.

The spike in security was prompted by online discussions urging Moroccans to make another attempt to enter Ceuta and Melilla, another Spanish enclave in North Africa, as soon as Saturday. In light of these developments, Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior issued a statement emphasizing the danger of such collective migration efforts and noted that several individuals who spread these messages online have already been arrested.

Additionally, the Ministry urged Spain to continue its efforts to repatriate Moroccan migrants still in Ceuta. Out of the more than 72,000 migrants who crossed during the earlier event, most have returned, with around 5,000 currently remaining. Spanish authorities are conducting screenings of these individuals, with a focus on processing asylum requests, of which most have been denied.

Spain has also implemented floating barriers in the waters where migrants traditionally swam to reach Ceuta, as part of its strategy to prevent future crossings.

Tragically, the earlier migration event resulted in the loss of at least 96 lives. As authorities from both Spain and Morocco address the ongoing challenges at the border, they are working to ensure safety and minimize further incidents.

For further updates, please stay tuned.

Ceuta Reinforces Border Security Amid Resurgence of Migration Concerns Spain and Morocco have increased security measures at the border surrounding Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa.
