The Sport & Rights Alliance is calling on the Women\u2019s Tennis Association (WTA) to rethink its new sex-testing policy, which they label as unfair and potentially damaging to players in women\u2019s tennis. <\/p>\n
Last month, the WTA announced that players will now need to undergo a one-time genetic test to check for the SRY gene, which helps determine biological sex. This test can be done using a cheek swab or a blood sample, and is necessary for players to take part in WTA tournaments.<\/p>\n
This change marks a significant departure from the WTA\u2019s earlier rules, which allowed transgender women to compete by simply declaring themselves female, provided they maintained testosterone levels below a certain limit for two years. Reports from July noted that no transgender women were competing in professional tennis at that time.<\/p>\n
Andrea Florence, the executive director of the Sport & Rights Alliance, expressed concerns that, despite the WTA’s good intentions, the new testing policy could harm many athletes. \u201cWhile the WTA may not want to cause harm, their actions could still lead to stigma and trauma among women and girls,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
### SABALENKA SUPPORTS THE TESTING AMID DEBATE<\/p>\n
The policy has sparked mixed reactions among top players. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is in favor of the testing, emphasizing the importance of fairness in competition due to biological differences. <\/p>\n
“I think it’s essential to maintain fairness in our sport,” Sabalenka remarked at the Canadian Open. “Biologically, men are generally stronger than women, so it wouldn\u2019t be fair for women to compete against biological men.” She added, \u201cI believe it took time to come to this decision, and I support it. Personally, I\u2019m focusing on my goals, and if testing applies to all of us, I\u2019m okay with that.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Coco Gauff acknowledged the need to safeguard fairness in women\u2019s sports but raised concerns about the potential backlash against the transgender community that could arise from this policy.<\/p>\n
This controversy follows a decision made by the International Olympic Committee earlier this year, stating that biological female athletes must undergo a one-time test to determine their sex for competing in women\u2019s events. The WTA claims its testing will include protections for confidentiality and data privacy.<\/p>\n
However, the Sport & Rights Alliance argues that these protections do not sufficiently address their main issues, adding more pressure for the WTA to reconsider a policy that has become one of the most controversial topics in women\u2019s tennis today.
