By July 25, a total of 3,437 cases were noted in the United States.

California leads with 873 reported cases, making up about a quarter of the national total. Other states seeing significant numbers include Texas with 433 cases, Tennessee with 283, and Ohio with 279. Several states are reporting fewer than 100 cases.

Candida auris is a yeast that can lead to severe infections, particularly in healthcare environments like hospitals and nursing homes. The CDC explains that this fungus is highly transmissible, spreading through contact with contaminated surfaces and shared medical equipment, like bedrails and doorknobs. It can also be carried by individuals who show no symptoms, a condition known as “colonization.”

The term “clinical case” refers to when C. auris is found in a sample taken during medical care, which does not always indicate an active infection. Some presence may simply reflect colonization without symptoms.

Health risks associated with C. auris can range from mild colonization to severe infections that can affect the bloodstream. Those most at risk include patients with serious health issues, particularly those using equipment such as breathing tubes or catheters, or those in hospitals for extended stays.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, has highlighted the growing concern over C. auris. He notes that it is resistant to many antifungal medications and tends to thrive in hospital settings. Symptoms like fever or chills can often be mistaken for other infections, making diagnosis challenging.

Invasive infections from this fungus have been linked to high mortality rates, between 30% and 72%. However, many of those affected are already seriously ill, complicating the ability to determine if the fungus was the immediate cause of death.

Due to its resistance to treatment, C. auris has been labeled an “urgent antimicrobial-resistance threat” by the CDC. More than 90% of U.S. samples are resistant to fluconazole, a common antifungal. Alternatives, such as echinocandins, are currently the preferred treatment options but some strains showcase resistance to all major antifungal groups.

Ongoing research aims to find new treatment options, and experts stress the importance of infection control measures within healthcare facilities to combat this growing issue of antibiotic resistance.

This situation is not only a local problem but part of a larger global challenge. Health officials continue to urge hospitals to enhance sterilization efforts to better protect vulnerable patients.

Rising Cases of Drug-Resistant Fungus Across the U.S. This year, a concerning number of cases involving a dangerous, drug-resistant fungus known as Candida auris have surfaced in 27 states, as reported by early data from the CDC.
