This offer opens the door for increased collaboration between India and the United States in exploring the moon and advancing human space travel.

The Moon Base announcement took place during NASA’s “Ignition” event on March 24, 2026, where the agency shared its plans to align with President Donald J. Trump’s National Space Policy, aiming to strengthen America’s leadership in outer space.

The invitation was formally extended during the ninth meeting of the India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group (CSJWG) at ISRO’s headquarters in Bengaluru on August 5 and 6. This gathering brought together key officials from both countries to discuss enhancing collaborations in civil and commercial space sectors under the transformative TRUST Initiative.

A significant focus of the meeting was the Artemis Accords, which outline guidelines for peaceful and sustainable lunar exploration. “NASA invited ISRO to join its Moon Base program, reinforcing our partnership forged through the Artemis Accords,” a statement from the US Embassy remarked. Discussions also covered the potential for an open scientific data-sharing initiative under these accords.

As part of their ongoing partnership, the two nations are looking to broaden collaboration in future space sciences and technologies related to human spaceflight. This meeting follows the successful launch of NISAR, a joint NASA-ISRO satellite mission designed to monitor changes in Earth’s land and ice areas using advanced radar technology.

Additionally, both countries reiterated their commitment to improving the sustainability of outer space operations through the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). They reviewed ongoing global efforts aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of this committee.

The exchange included contributions from V. Narayanan, secretary of the Department of Space, and US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor. The meeting was co-chaired by M. Sankaran, director of ISRO’s UR Rao Satellite Centre, along with US officials Wesley Brooks and Kathleen Karika from NASA.

As the US-led Artemis program progresses towards a permanent human presence on the Moon, India’s participation in the Moon Base could expand its lunar exploration efforts beyond its past Chandrayaan missions. This collaboration would also enhance opportunities in science, technology, and human space travel, adding depth to their strategic partnership.

NASA Invites ISRO to Join Moon Base Initiative BENGALURU: NASA has reached out to India’s space agency, ISRO, inviting them to be part of its ambitious Moon Base program.
