A poignant video captured the moment a building began to quake and ultimately collapsed, leading to chaos as onlookers screamed in terror.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the disaster, Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella declared a state of emergency and mobilized rescue teams to search through the wreckage in several cities. &#8220;The national government is doing everything possible to save lives, support affected communities, and provide necessary aid,&#8221; De La Espriella stated. &#8220;Our first priority is to rescue those trapped in the debris.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake\u2019s epicenter was near San Jose del Palmar in Choco at a depth of approximately 66 miles. Fortunately, there was no threat of a tsunami, as stated by the U.S. tsunami warning system.<\/p>\n<p>This earthquake is the first major crisis for President De La Espriella, having only recently taken office. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed that the Trump Administration is ready to assist, urging Americans in Colombia to register with the State Department\u2019s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for updates.<\/p>\n<p>The region experienced some of its most severe impacts in Risaralda, where at least 40 individuals lost their lives. Valle del Cauca, which includes the city of Cali, reported 27 fatalities. Additionally, deaths were confirmed in Choco, Caldas, and Antioquia.<\/p>\n<p>Cali, one of Colombia&#8217;s major cities, faced significant destruction. Mayor Alejandro Eder reported that more than two dozen buildings had collapsed, with many people still unaccounted for. &#8220;So far, we have rescued two individuals alive, but numerous others remain trapped,&#8221; Eder shared with local radio.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curi of Choco also reported injuries and major damage in the provincial capital, Quibdo, cautioning residents about potential aftershocks. Flights were temporarily halted at various airports so inspections could be conducted for any structural damage.<\/p>\n<p>The earthquake, felt widely across the nation, triggered evacuations and led to reports of destruction in various areas.
