Base Power is on a mission to deploy its innovative battery systems across neighborhoods in the United States. These systems not only deliver backup power during outages but also help homeowners save on electricity bills. With rising electricity demand\u2014partly driven by the growth of artificial intelligence\u2014Base Power is positioned to alleviate some of the pressure on the nation\u2019s power grids.<\/p>\n
Recently valued at an impressive $13 billion, the company successfully raised $1 billion in its Series D funding round, with notable investors including Ribbit Capital, Addition, and JPMorgan Chase\u2019s Strategic Investment Group. Existing backers such as Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz also contributed. While Michael Dell isn’t involved in the day-to-day operations, Zach Dell describes him as a valuable mentor.<\/p>\n
Base Power, headquartered in Austin, has experienced significant growth, ramping up installations from just one battery a day to over 100. The company now services more than 30,000 customers and has ambitious plans for expansion. “We want to bring Base to every neighborhood in America over time,” Dell shared. He also has eyes set on international markets like the U.K., Germany, and Australia.<\/p>\n
To support this growth, Base has opened its first battery factory in Austin and is planning a larger facility, expected to be operational by 2027.<\/p>\n
Unlike conventional generators that can cost upwards of $15,000, Base Power offers an affordable option. Customers can have a battery system installed starting at $695, plus a monthly membership fee of $19. These systems can keep homes powered during outages for up to two or three days, depending on usage.<\/p>\n
Zach Dell emphasizes that Base Power operates as an infrastructure company. “We own and operate the assets in the wholesale power markets, which is where we generate our revenue,” he explains. <\/p>\n
The company\u2019s new batteries can store 39.2 kilowatt-hours of electricity, outpacing many other products on the market. Base Power’s strategy is especially relevant as more people turn to smart technologies, which increase energy demand.<\/p>\n
By optimizing charging times\u2014charging the batteries when electricity prices are low and discharging when prices rise\u2014Base Power helps customers manage their energy expenses more effectively.<\/p>\n
In just three years, the company has successfully expanded from Texas into Illinois, with plans to reach even more states next year. In new markets, Base Power is enticing customers further by offering initial battery installations for as low as $95. <\/p>\n
