In modern history, India has produced only four men\u2019s World Cup umpires: Amarjit Singh Bawa, Tarlok Singh Bhullar, Satinder Sharma, and Raghu Prasad. With Prasad\u2019s retirement last year, the country\u2019s presence in top-level international officiating has diminished considerably.<\/p>\n
### A LEGACY IN DANGER<\/p>\n
Satinder Sharma, a former Olympian and World Cup umpire, believes that India faces the risk of losing a legacy that took decades to build. He mentioned, \u201cAfter Bawa and Bhullar, Raghu and I kept that legacy alive. It was never easy competing with European officials.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sharma emphasized that Indian umpires need much more exposure beyond domestic matches to be competitive on the global stage. He pointed out, \u201cIf domestic umpires don\u2019t get to officiate in important international tournaments, how will they gain the experience needed? There\u2019s a big gap between domestic and international umpiring. We have talent, but they need more opportunities and support from the federation. Proper planning and a structured pathway are crucial if India wants to have officials at upcoming World Cups or the Olympics.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also suggested that umpires should regularly participate in national coaching camps to stay updated on the evolving challenges of modern hockey.<\/p>\n
### LARGER CHALLENGES FOR ASPIRING UMPIRES<\/p>\n
Former officials have highlighted financial instability as a significant factor discouraging young people from pursuing umpiring as a career. Amarjit Singh Bawa reminisced about a time when umpires received little recognition, while Raghu Prasad shared that life after retirement remains uncertain for many officials.<\/p>\n
Prasad stated, \u201cDuring my umpiring days, I dedicated myself fully. After retiring, I had to search for a private job on my own. Under such circumstances, why would parents encourage their kids to take up umpiring?\u201d<\/p>\n
Unlike players, umpires seldom get government jobs, financial perks, or long-term career support despite representing India on the international stage. As the World Cup approaches, India\u2019s lack of representation in the officiating panel emphasizes a critical and often overlooked aspect of the sport.
