He believes that punishing these students and making them attend court repeatedly won&#8217;t help in addressing their concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The protests reached a boiling point in July when the leak of national exam papers led to a retest for around 2 million students. This incident sparked frustration over limited job opportunities for young people in India.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the protests, authorities have taken legal action against hundreds of demonstrators, especially after some faced off with security forces and directed abusive remarks at the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are misguided young people. It is our responsibility to guide them on the right path. Punishing them and forcing them into a cycle of court appearances will not resolve the underlying issues,\u201d said Modi in a video shared on social media on Friday. He added, \u201cI want to forgive them, and I hope society supports this approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protests turned violent in various regions, including New Delhi, where demonstrators attempting to march towards parliament encountered tear gas and baton charges from police.<\/p>\n<p>The group behind the protests, the Cockroach Janta Party, reported that \u201chundreds\u201d of students had been arrested in different states, contradicting the government\u2019s promise to withdraw cases against demonstrators.<\/p>\n<p>However, after weeks of demonstrations, young protesters decided to end their unrest following the resignation of the education minister and the government\u2019s agreement to meet their demands, which included overhauling the exam system and dropping police cases against them.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the unrest, the Modi government has also proposed a new bill in parliament aimed at strengthening laws regarding public examinations, suggesting harsher penalties and longer prison sentences for those involved in exam paper leaks.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MUMBAI, Aug 1 \u2013 Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed a desire to forgive students who used offensive language against him during protests last month.
