Officials have not pinpointed a single cause for this sudden rise in migrant numbers, but recent Spanish Supreme Court rulings that limit immediate deportation of migrants arriving by sea may have influenced the situation. Some migration advocates argue that it\u2019s unlikely that most migrants were aware of the ruling.<\/p>\n
The crisis has also stirred reactions beyond Spain\u2019s borders. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has even suggested that Italy might withdraw from the Schengen open-border agreement with Spain to protect its borders and ensure citizen safety.<\/p>\n
Ceuta, a small Spanish territory on Morocco\u2019s Mediterranean coast, has long been a hotspot for migration. Individuals from various African nations frequently attempt to reach the enclave through swimming or scaling its heavily fortified border fence, hoping to enter the European Union.<\/p>\n
