This remarkable achievement was years in the making and filled with challenges.

On a rainy evening in Glasgow, the 22-year-old from a small village in Maharashtra delivered an incredible performance in the men’s 100m T47 race. Not only did he win gold, but he also set a new Games Record along with a personal best time. Soon after, India’s joy multiplied as Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath secured the silver medal, finishing at 10.83 seconds, marking a historic one-two finish for India.

A Night to Remember

Kevin Santos from England took home the bronze with a time of 10.85 seconds, but the spotlight was on the Indian athletes who created a memorable moment in para athletics.

With this victory, India claimed its third gold medal at the Glasgow Games, following earlier wins by Mirabai Chanu in weightlifting and Sharmila Dhankar in the women’s F57 shot put. India’s medal tally rose to three gold, nine silver, and three bronze medals, placing them eighth in the standings.

Overcoming Challenges

Gavit’s road to this monumental win is a story of courage and hard work. Growing up in a village near Nashik, he lost his left hand due to an accident in childhood. The medical facilities in his area were limited, making quality care hard to come by. Additionally, access to proper sports facilities was minimal, which made pursuing a career in athletics seem like an uphill battle.

His fortunes changed when coach Vaijanth Kale discovered him while he was competing in school events. “I saw the potential in him,” Kale said after Gavit’s win. “He was competing with able-bodied athletes and performing remarkably well.”

Before diving into para athletics, Gavit showcased his talent by winning medals at the Khelo India Youth Games, even competing against able-bodied athletes, proving his exceptional speed.

A Brave New Path

Initially known as a 400m runner, Gavit focused on open events until just last year. His major breakthrough came at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, where he clinched gold in the men’s 400m T47. He later competed at the Paris Paralympics, finishing third in his heat.

When the Glasgow Games dropped the 400m event, Gavit made a bold switch to the 100m. His decision paid off, despite the rainy conditions that made the track slippery and the race challenging. “The start was a bit slow, but I picked up speed,” he noted.

Looking Ahead

While Gavit celebrated his victory, Basil Morssinganakath’s silver medal ensured a historic achievement for India. Hailing from Kerala, Basil, who was born without his right arm, also delivered his best performance, emphasizing India’s growing prowess in para sprinting.

The men’s 100m T47 event features athletes with limb differences. India’s success in this category shows the significant progress made in para athletics over the years.

Yet for Gavit, this victory is just one of many goals ahead. “I am focused on winning more medals. I hope to perform well at the upcoming Para Asian Games and the Paralympics,” he remarked, hinting that his journey is far from over.

With a spirit that has overcome numerous challenges, Dilip Gavit’s story continues as he aims for even greater heights in the world of athletics.

Dilip Gavit Makes History at the Commonwealth Games In just 10.71 seconds, Dilip Mahadu Gavit carved his name into the annals of Commonwealth Games history.
