Lieutenant Commander Mark Wilton from the HXG highlighted the teamwork among the AUKUS partners. He stated, \u201cOur Seabed Warfare team collaborated closely with our allies, effectively using Royal Australian Navy tools when needed.\u201d<\/p>\n
The exercises included several Gavia missions, which involved tasks like acoustic calibration and night operations. \u201cThe team performed incredibly well, and their skills and experience have significantly improved,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Concerns have grown regarding threats from foreign entities targeting essential underwater infrastructure, especially following suspicious activities by a Russian submarine near the UK earlier this year. This has intensified the urgency for the UK and its allies to strengthen their detection and response capabilities.<\/p>\n
The exercise took place as part of the AUKUS Pillar 2 agreement, which focuses on advancing military collaboration among the three nations. Known as Lanternfish, this exercise pushed participants beyond theoretical scenarios into live operations, showcasing how cooperating partners can tackle common security challenges more effectively.<\/p>\n
Lanternfish also signaled the transition of the Royal Navy towards a “Hybrid Navy,” where both manned and unmanned systems operate together to boost effectiveness in the field.<\/p>\n
Commodore Marcus Rose, the Deputy Director for Defence Underwater, remarked, \u201cThese events offer great chances to test our ability to work together in real-world scenarios, helping us to quickly enhance our capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n
