This innovative approach is designed to help patients recover more quickly and experience less pain after their operations.

Out of fewer than 35 surgeons nationwide, Banner Health proudly has two who are specially trained in these new robotic techniques. They are the only breast and general surgeons in Arizona to have undergone this advanced training, which received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2025.

Dr. Brittany Murphy, a surgical oncologist at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, is among just 13 breast oncologists in the country qualified to perform a cutting-edge procedure known as the single port robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy. This technique utilizes minimal incisions, often hidden within natural folds, leading to reduced scarring and quicker healing times.

“I feel honored to introduce this groundbreaking surgery to Arizona,” Dr. Murphy stated. “It significantly enhances the quality of life for breast cancer patients by minimizing scars and preserving nerve function. This minimally invasive option helps patients recover faster, experience less pain, and achieve better reconstructive results.”

In the realm of general surgery, Dr. Jennifer Preston is uniquely positioned as the only general surgeon in Arizona trained in single incision robotic techniques for inguinal hernia repairs and gallbladder removals. Traditionally, these procedures would require several cuts, but now they can be completed with just one incision.

“What excites me most about this technology is how it enhances the options available to my patients through minimally invasive surgery,” said Dr. Preston. “In the past, hernia repairs and gallbladder removals often needed multiple small cuts or a larger incision.”

Until now, the single port system was primarily approved for specific ENT, urology, thoracic, and colorectal surgeries. With the training of both Dr. Murphy and Dr. Preston, Banner Health has established itself as a leader in advanced robotic surgery across various medical fields.

Dr. Nirav Patel, the medical director for surgical and procedural services at Banner Health, emphasized the positive impact of these advancements. “It’s not just about the technology,” he said. “It’s about giving patients hope, confidence, and the best possible outcomes. Their training in these newly approved procedures guarantees that Arizonans receive elite-level care right here in their community.”

PHOENIX – Banner Health has achieved a significant milestone, becoming one of the few healthcare systems in the United States trained in advanced robotic surgery that requires only a single incision.
