This trend, known as the “morbidity gap,” highlights the increasing number of years individuals spend dealing with chronic conditions, such as back pain, hearing loss, and mental health challenges like depression.

Research conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington found that in 2023, an average of 14.5% of life was spent in poor health, up from 13.6% in 1990. In the United States, the situation is even more concerning, with the morbidity gap stretching to about 14 years, which is roughly 17.8% of the expected lifespan.

Between 1990 and 2023, life expectancy globally rose from 64.6 years to 73.8 years, with healthy life expectancy increasing from 55.9 to 63.1 years. However, this increase in longevity has not been matched by improvements in healthy living, meaning that more people are spending their extra years suffering from chronic diseases.

The report notes that wealthier nations see a more significant widening of this gap, likely due to better access to life-prolonging medical resources. Women generally outlive men but are also experiencing a higher percentage of years spent unwell.

Dr. Antony Chu, a clinical assistant professor at Brown University, highlighted that the study’s key takeaway isn’t just that people are living longer, but that we are better at delaying death than maintaining good health. He stated, “Modern medicine has made great strides in reducing death rates from serious illnesses, but many additional years are being spent in discomfort or disability.”

The researchers assessed data from 204 countries from 1990 to 2023, focusing on non-fatal health issues that contribute to a lower quality of life. Issues such as musculoskeletal disorders, mental health problems, and physical injuries account for about 57% of the years lived in poor health globally.

Dr. Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, emphasized the need for a shift in focus. He argued that future improvements in public health should aim at enhancing the quality of life, not just extending it. “We should prioritize not only lifespan but healthspan,” he noted.

To promote health, Dr. Chu recommends regular evaluations of physical abilities, mobility, and mental health, suggesting that these checks are just as crucial as routine checks for blood pressure or glucose levels. Identifying functional decline early could improve health outcomes.

Additionally, social connections and mental well-being play vital roles in healthy aging. Addressing issues like loneliness and depression may lead to better health and independence. Dr. Chu pointed out that in many cultures outside the U.S., older adults retain significant roles in families, which helps them stay engaged and valued.

In contrast, many older Americans find themselves increasingly isolated at a time when strong social ties could be crucial. Dr. Chu concludes that healthy aging is influenced not just by biological factors, but also by community, purpose, and human relationships.

Study Shows Rising Health Challenges as People Live Longer A new study reveals that while people are living longer around the world, many are facing more years with health issues.
