Early reports show that the private sector saw growth for the first time in three months.

The S&P Global Flash UK Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), a key metric tracked by economists, registered at 52.1 in July, a significant improvement from June’s score of 49.3. Scores above 50 indicate growth, while those below suggest a decline.

Analysts had initially anticipated a downturn, with expectations set at a PMI of 49.7. The actual data exceeded these projections, catching many off guard.

Chris Williamson, the chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, commented, “UK businesses reported stronger activity in July, signaling a quicker pace of economic growth as we enter the third quarter. Hospitality businesses benefited from favorable weather, the World Cup excitement, and more people taking domestic holidays, although high costs and uncertainty kept some international travel at bay.”

However, he added that growth in the overall services sector remained weak due to ongoing cost-of-living challenges.

Production levels in the manufacturing sector rose to 53.6, marking the strongest growth since September 2024. This growth was attributed to improved market conditions and an uptick in new orders.

The service sector also rebounded, reaching a three-month high of 51.8. Many businesses reported an increase in demand, driven by fans flocking to pubs to watch World Cup matches.

Despite this positive momentum, some concerns lingered. Elevated uncertainty due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East had reportedly affected consumer confidence, and certain areas were impacted by the extreme heat.

July’s findings also revealed a decrease in input price inflation, indicating that cost pressures in both the manufacturing and service sectors were easing.

Thomas Pugh, the chief economist at RSM UK, noted, “The sharp rise in the flash PMI indicates that the economy got a nice boost from the excitement of the World Cup, pleasant weather, and lower fuel prices in July. Coupled with growing consumer confidence and stronger retail sales, it appears that households and businesses have adapted remarkably well to the current global challenges.”

UK Business Activity Surges Thanks to Good Weather and World Cup Excitement In July, a blend of summer sunshine, the World Cup, and holidaygoers opting for staycations led to a surprising rebound in UK business activity.
