They are calling for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage with both the protestors and Wangchuk directly.

In an open letter addressed to PM Modi and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the group Hindus for Human Rights highlighted serious issues raised by the protestors about examination irregularities, the need for better educational governance, and the accountability of institutions. They stressed that the government should respond to these concerns and create a transparent process for addressing the failures identified by the protestors.

The group acknowledged that while the government might not agree to Pradhan’s resignation, it should not use this disagreement as an excuse to ignore the protestors’ demands. They pointed out that the ongoing protests reflect a broader trend of students and young people seeking accountability from the government.

Sunita Viswanath, Executive Director of Hindus for Human Rights, emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging that the government must engage with the protestors before more harm is done.

Health Comes First

The group has also urged Wangchuk and the other protestors to prioritize their health, stating that they should not have to endanger their well-being to make their voices heard. They called on the government and relevant authorities in New Delhi to send a representative to meet with the fasting protestors, provide necessary medical care, and ensure their right to protest is protected.

They mentioned that the concerns raised by the protestors are being recognized nationwide and internationally, adding that the health of the participants should not be sacrificed for their demands to be taken seriously.

Support for Wangchuk’s Protest

To show solidarity with Wangchuk, Hindus for Human Rights and The Azadi Project will gather in Washington, D.C., on Friday, supporting his demands for accountability in the education system. They stated that Wangchuk’s hunger strike serves as a powerful call for action regarding the examination failures affecting students in India.

Nineteenth Day of Hunger Strike

Wangchuk is now on the 19th day of his hunger strike. A public interest petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court regarding his health, seeking urgent medical intervention and potentially hospitalization. Recent health updates reveal that Wangchuk is “very weak,” with his weight dropping significantly since the start of his strike, though his vital signs remain relatively stable.

The protest has received support from various political leaders and public figures, many of whom have urged him to prioritize his health and end the hunger strike. However, Wangchuk remains steadfast, encouraging supporters to join him in a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20.

The ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ is planning a one-day mass hunger strike as part of their ongoing protests, which began on June 20. They are demanding the resignation of Minister Pradhan and monetary compensation for families of students who allegedly took their lives due to examination-related issues.

An Indian group based in the United States is expressing concerns about the health of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike as part of the ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ protest in Jantar Mantar, Delhi.
