Brendon McCullum Steps Down as England’s Test Coach<\/strong><\/p>\n BIRMINGHAM, England \u2014 Brendon McCullum has shared his regrets with England cricket fans regarding the team’s performance during his time as head coach of the Test squad. He acknowledged that it might be time for someone new to take charge.<\/p>\n While McCullum will continue in his role for the limited-overs format, he was dismissed from the Test coaching position on Sunday, a role he had held since 2022.<\/p>\n \u201cI received a tap on the shoulder,\u201d McCullum commented at Edgbaston on Monday, just before England faces India in a one-day international series. \u201cI was disappointed but I fully respect the decision. We\u2019re in a results-driven business, and fundamentally, our results just weren\u2019t good enough. It\u2019s time for someone else to take a shot.\u201d<\/p>\n During his time as England\u2019s Test coach, he achieved 27 wins, two draws, and 20 losses. Known for his dynamic playing style dubbed “Bazball,” McCullum, along with captain Ben Stokes, brought excitement to Test cricket. They celebrated impressive success at the start, winning 10 of their first 11 Tests.<\/p>\n However, as some key players retired, the team’s performance deteriorated. England lost seven out of their last nine Tests, including a 2-1 defeat to New Zealand last month, which came just before Stokes announced his retirement.<\/p>\n \u201cWe struggled to win those key series against India and Australia, and for that, I can only say sorry,\u201d McCullum expressed. \u201cAs the leader, I was responsible for the team\u2019s culture, tactics, and results.\u201d<\/p>\n Having been involved in cricket for over 20 years, McCullum realizes the importance of results. \u201cIf you\u2019re not getting the outcomes, then it\u2019s someone else\u2019s turn,\u201d he said, fully owning the situation and admitting it wasn\u2019t good enough.<\/p>\n Sharing his thoughts with the BBC, he noted the symbolic timing of his departure, just weeks after Stokes\u2019 emotional farewell at Trent Bridge. \u201cStokesy sent me some lovely messages.
